There's nothing like having a car full of teenage boys to really make you appreciate the value of a good deodorant - think head out of the window gasping for air as I drive!

But what is it that makes us smelly, and why are some people more 'high' then others? Plus how can we detox those pits and go natural without losing all of our friends to our 'natural' fragrance?

THE TOXINS BEGIN
Remember when you were desparate for your first deodorant. Mine was Cool Charm. All butterflies and pink pretty container marketed for the teenage girl. Well take your current age and minus it from when you started using an aluminium based deodorant ....and we've got ourselves a case of detoxing to do.

WHY WOULD YOU BOTHER SWITCHING TO A NATURAL DEODORANT?
The reason why you want to switch to a natural deodorant is the below....!!!! These ingredients are taken directly from one of the top selling anti-perspirant deodorants in N.Z.

I don't even know what half of these are...but really? Do we need all of those toxins in one of the most sensitive areas of our body? Plus knowing that our body absorbs 80% of all personal care products directly in to our blood stream, do we really want that swimming around our body and those of our teenagers?

Active Ingredient: Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly (14.8%).Inactive Ingredient:Cyclopentasiloxane, Stearyl Alcohol, C12-15Alkyl Benzoate, Ppg-14 Butyl Ether, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Dimethicone, Polyethylene, Fragrance (Parfum),Steareth-100, Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil,Ethylene Dodecanedioate, ...

"Your body is an amazing system that is designed to do what it does for optimum health.  Sweating is a huge part of the detoxification pathway as it helps to cool your body as well as detoxify.

As your skin is the largest organ it is integral for getting rid of toxins from your body."

BUT WHY IS UNDERARM SWEAT SO SMELLY IN SOME PEOPLE?

When perspiration/sweat encounters bacteria on the skin it creates a body odour. Interestingly enough, sweat itself does not smell. It's when it hits the dead skin cells on the way out that it creates an odour. Plus your armpits are moist, warm and dark so create a great environment for bacteria to breed.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
  • Shower twice a day especially in the Summer
  • Wash your clothes regularly
  • Wear cotton or fabrics that breathe (school uniform manufacturers please note!)
  • Drink plenty of water - 2 litres in the summer
  • Exercise regularly to get a good sweat up so that your body naturally detoxifies.
  • Swap caffeinated drinks/alcohol for water or herbal teas.
  • If you are very sensitive watch your intake of onions and garlic as that can cause more odour.

DITCH THE ANTIPERSPIRANTS
I know it can be hard letting go of that security blanket masking the body odour for the past however many years, but the research shows that by using an anti-perspirant you are actually creating more body odour. Yes that's right!

WHICH LEADS US TO THE DETOX PERIOD
When you swap to a natural deodorant, your pits will be singing out hallelejuh as will your body. You are no longer smothering toxins in to one of the most sensitive parts of your body. Your lymph glands and breast tissue will be forever grateful.

However, for some people, initially your partner, your friends and your work mates may not be so thrilled!

It's okay....smile sagely and let them know your smell is your bodies wisdom at work and you will soon return to your fragrant self!

Detox on a weekend.
  • Set a date and make that change - the weekend is as good a time as any.
  • Work up a good sweat over the weekend to really get those armpits cleared out.
  • Now that you don't have an 'anti-perspirant' masking the sweat, expect your pits to be more flowing in moisture. Celebrate it!
  • Get ready for a bit more washing and a bit more showering over the weekend. Hang tight...and hold on...it is going to be better soon!
  • If you are really concerned about your odour (most people aren't actually that bad) I suggest popping a drop of essential oil on to your under garments, scarf or in a hanky in your pocket.

SWITCH TO AN ALL NATURAL DEODORANT!
Look for a completely 100% natural balm that helps to absorb the moisture and most importantly has a probiotic added to it so that it can help to recultivate good bacteria in those pits.

I highly recommend and use Angel Wings and have had many people saying how they have found it to be the best all natural deodorant balm out. With a mild fragrance of Lemongrass this is suitable for men, woman, and teens.

So get switching, get detoxing, and get rubbing that natural deodorant balm in to those pits!

Love to hear your feedback on going natural!
